The scale of destructive effect of an earthquake is really huge since it can also be the cause of a foreboding disaster such as tsunami. Number of deaths will eventually be doubled when the killer tsunami paired with the destructive earthquake.
The 2004 earthquake in the Indian Ocean where the epicenter is off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia is one of the most destructive and deadliest in the history of mankind. Huge tsunamis hit the nearby country such as Thailand, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Indonesia – the hardest hit, India and many other countries in South and Southeast Asia and East of Africa causing more than two hundred thousand lives.
MOST DESTRUCTIVE EARTHQUAKES IN HISTORY
1. Shaanxi, China – January 23, 1556
This is the most destructive and deadliest recorded earthquake in history killing more than 830, 000 lives. With magnitude 8 the effects are tremendous and were felt in 9 provinces of China like Gangsu, Hebei, Hunan, Anhui and many others. Houses, building, temples and city walls were all demolished and what is left are the collapsed place with dead people on it.
2. Tangshan, China – July 27, 1976
The damage has reached Beijing with an estimated 655,000 death toll and more than seven hundred thousand injuries. This is the second greatest earthquake damage in history with 7.5 magnitude that extended in Tang-Shan province.
3. Sumatra, Indonesia – December 26, 2004
With magnitude 9.1, the earthquake is felt across parts of Southeast Asia and Africa. Total of 227, 898 people were dead and missing with 1.7 billion were displaced by this calamity. The 2004 tsunami has been one of the deadliest recorded in history. After effects were experienced wherein seiches were reported in countries like India and United States, gas emissions in Myanmar and mud volcano became active two days after the hit.
EARTHQUAKE IN PAKISTAN
Southwest Pakistan has experienced a 7.2 magnitude earthquake early Wednesday wherein tremors extended up to areas in United Arab Emirates and Dew Delhi, India.
The epicenter is reported to be 200 miles away from the nearest village, southwest the capital of Quetta. No casualties have been reported since the 1:00 AM earthquake but few damages were spotted in Mashkil where several mud houses were collapsed. According to reports, the nearest populated town Dalbandin is far enough to reach by the quake. The town is populated with 15,000 people.
Citizens who felt the quake were naturally alarmed thinking that it might lead to something more destructive. They were all out in the streets.
The quake lasted for about 20 seconds.
