Genital Herpes, its cause, its curse and the medicines that may help...
If you are reading this article while sitting in your office, do a quick survey of the people sitting around you.
If there are seven other people in the office, it is very likely that at least two of you are infected with Genital Herpes.
Yes, you read that correctly, according to studies made by the American Social Health Association there are currently 1 in 4 people over the age of 12 that are infected with either Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) type 1, or HSV type 2, the viruses that cause Genital Herpes. Most cases of Genital Herpes is caused by HSV type 2.
The major problem in the spread of these viruses is the fact that in quite a number of cases the symptoms won't show for many years, or ever. Thus even if your partner doesn't show any symptoms it does not indicate whether they are infected with the virus or not. The virus can spread in situations like these – where no symptoms or sores are present.
Symptoms of Genital Herpes include:
- A group of blisters or open sores on the vagina, penis, cervix, buttocks, vulva or anus.
- Pain in the areas mentioned above.
- A Burning sensation when urine flows over the area or sores.
- Itching in the areas mentioned above, as well as
- The inability to urinate when severe swelling blocks the urethra.
Outbreaks of the symptoms tend to happen within two to three weeks after the virus has entered the body, however this period can fluctuate greatly from case to case. As has been mentioned before, in some cases the virus doesn't cause any symptoms for many years, or ever. Outbreaks also tend not to happen only once, in many cases a person with Genital Herpes can experience up to 6 recurring outbreaks.
There are currently no cure for Genital Herpes, however, long strides have been made in the development of a vaccine against the virus. Some experts believe that a viable vaccine could plausibly be available within five years.
If you suspect that you are infected with Genital Herpes it is recommended that you see your physician or gynecologist as soon as possible in order to be tested for HSV 1 or 2 antibodies, by one of the two FDA-approved, type-specific tests that are on the market. If it is confirmed that you have contracted HSV your physician will most likely prescribe you certain antiviral medicines. In addition to these antiviral medicines it is recommended that you use natural pain-relief remedies or medicines to decrease your discomfort.
Antiviral medicines that are currently available for Genital Herpes include:
- Acyclovir
- Famciclovir, and
- Valacyclovir
All three of these antiviral medicines are very effective in stopping the growth of HSV. These medicines are usually taken orally, but can also be given by IV. There is also a topical form of acyclovir available on the market called Zovirax ointment, though it's effectiveness is debatable.
The best ways to protect yourself from the virus are the same as for any other Sexually Transmitted Diseases which are:
- Abstinence
- Being Faithful to your Partner
- Using a Condom whenever participating in sexual activities.
These three concepts have been ingrained into most of our minds since before middle school, however it still remains the best ways to keep from getting infected with HSV, HIV, or any other STD's.
If you need any more information on Genital Herpes or any other Sexually Transmitted Diseases, it is recommended that you call the Center for Disease Control and Prevention at (800) 232-4636.
