Giving a toast is an honored practice in celebration such as parties, weddings, award giving, retirement, birthdays, anniversary and many others. To give a toast does not only mean drinks and wines but a brief and special speech is always associated. To give a special toast means it should be unforgettable, momentous and effective.

Giving a toast vary from different occasions. Different occasions may give you a hint of the formality of the event and the formality of toast. Formal gatherings may require a more elegant and sentimental speech while parties like birthdays held at home or to informal venues such pool parties or garden parties may require casual and spur-of-the-moment speech.

How to Begin?

Like any other event, giving a toast should be prepared well. The one who will be giving a toast should at first have his speech ready – a speech that should be perfect for the event. He should be very observant to the number of people present on the event and the class or type of people that are majority in the event. Older audience maybe interested in a witty and sophisticated speech while younger ones go with wacky and spontaneous speech. Make sure that every glass are filled, everyone is paying attention which means that the attendance is full that of course include the person or people you wanted to give your toast to. Everyone’s attention should at first be gathered and gained by the traditional clinging of the glass. By doing so, everyone will be attentive of the impending part of the event which is the giving of toast.

How to Give a Toast?

Giving a toast is divided into two parts; the speech and the ceremonial toast. Before going to a much awaited toast, a special speech is expected to spice up the ceremony. The speech will carry the entire event. The following guide will help you to a successful and memorable ceremonial toast.

  1. As a speaker, be sure that everyone can see you. Standing is the best option to have everyone’s eyes set on you.
  2. Try to relax and clearly deliver your speech. Don not be too fast and too slow. Be sure that everyone is hooked with what you are saying.
  3. Your speech should not be too long that everyone might get bored. As much as possible, make it short or brief and meaningful.
  4. Do not bring a guide or note where you can read your speech. MEMORIZE it.
  5. Maintain eye contact. The first and last person you should look at should be the person/people you are giving your toast to and the entire speech should be to everyone. This will make you connected to everyone in the event.
  6. While giving your speech, you should be holding your glass as much as possible to your waist level to arouse anticipation to everyone of your ceremonial toast.
  7. Nearing to the end of your speech, slowly raise the glass to your eye level. This will give you spontaneity with what you are doing.
  8. Look in the eye of the person you are addressing and slowly move it to everyone. You should be the first to take a drink, only a sip after the toast.

It is best to consider that the speaker will carry the event or the ceremonial toast so speaker should be prepared or as much as possible adept with speaking and talking to a bigger crowd or else, the celebration will be unforgettable in a negative way.
