The idiots guide to virtual server web hosting

Now, don’t get all upset at the innocent use of the word “idiot” in the title of this article.  I use it with the utmost respect!  I categorize myself under that specific term.  To be completely honest, the first time I heard the words:  virtual server web hosting, I had absolutely no idea what it meant.

I became bewildered and felt very old!  Just to clarify, I am not that old!  I just never had an interest in the wonderful world of new technology or the internet.  You may be asking yourself: what changed?  I guess I “grew-up”.  I realized that most of the adult world revolved around computers and the internet.  I quickly had to learn all kinds of complicating words, such as virtual hosting, web servers and lots more.

I have to defend myself a bit, I’m not completely technologically challenged, I “googled” the words: virtual server web hosting.  Not for the first time, one wonderful site came to my rescue – Wikipedia!  What did I learn?  I learned that: “virtual hosting is a method that servers such as web servers use to host more than one domain name on the same computer, sometimes on the same IP address” – thanks to Wikipedia.

I learned through some more research that you can have virtual hosting or shared hosting.  Both virtual hosting and shared hosting only has a set amount of resources (CPU).  Both these options are cheaper than a dedicated server.  They are very similar, but do have some distinct differences.

Virtual hosting has some advantages that shared hosting doesn’t have.  Shared hosting, the cheapest option, suggests exactly that – you share hosting services and resources with other websites, and you have no say on how much you or they use.  In other words, other websites can use some of your resources and if all resources are used up, it’s too bad for you.  With virtual hosting that cannot happen.  Every website hosted on the virtual server get a set amount of resources, and they cannot use each others resources.  Thus, if another website uses all its assigned resources, it cannot access your websites resources.
